With over 280 employees at the San Martin mine, Starcore endeavors to create initiatives that will encourage community development and pride. Our philosophy on corporate responsibility is to instill environmental awareness in our community’s families.

Starcore supports the local schools in San Martin with generous contributions to their programs. A significant number of children in our community have at least one parent employed at the mine. Recognizing this strong connection, we regularly invite the children to visit our facilities, where they can gain firsthand insight into the mining industry. These visits provide an opportunity to learn about our operations, observe the rigorous safety practices that protect their parents, and understand the steps we take to safeguard the environment. By engaging with the next generation in this way, we aim to foster awareness, inspire curiosity, and strengthen the bond between our company and the families who are an integral part of our success.
We sponsor the annual summer camp “Curso de Verano” which provides activities for the local children during their summer vacation. The activities include a tour of the mine, inspecting the plant nursery and the vegetable patches, checking out rock samples, painting pictures, making treats plus a visit to a water park and much more. The Safety of Our Employees is of the Utmost Importance
At Starcore International Mines Ltd., every measure is taken daily to ensure the workplace is safe. San Martin has received the Mexican Mining Chamber’s Annual Silver Helmet Award for mine safety four times. This recognition is given to companies for demonstrating a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and a strong focus on the well-being of their employees. It is the highest honor in the Mexican mining sector.

We actively support the development of medical skills within our workforce through regular monthly training programs and health workshops. Each workshop will usually pertain to a different medical topic such as burns, fractures, CPR etc. We ensure our employees are equipped with essential first-aid knowledge and also emergency response capabilities. This commitment not only enhances workplace safety but also strengthens the overall well-being of the communities where we operate as these crucial skills may be applied at the mine site or at home.
The health and well-being of our workforce is fundamental to our corporate values. To support this commitment, we provide free annual medical check ups for all employees which include many additional exams. These check-ups ensure early detection and prevention of potential health concerns.
Our dedication to employee well-being is exemplified through our greenhouse and vegetable patches, cultivating a diverse array of vegetables and herbs exclusively for San Martin’s employee dining room. As part of a broader commitment to employee wellness, we have initiated a revamped menu that places greater emphasis on healthier meal options. Informal observations indicate that employees are taking fewer sick days and reporting milder symptoms during illness episodes. We are cautiously optimistic that this improvement is attributed to enhanced nutritional support from our cafeteria program and prompt medical attention through our Nursing and Medical department.

In September 2024 we received approval from the Mexican environmental authority, the Direccion General de Impacto y Riesgo Ambiental (DGIRA) (General Deputy for Environmental Control), to extend the term for Starcore’s management of its dry stack tailings at the San Martin Mine. The extension of the environmental permit gives Starcore an additional ten years of life expectancy for the Company’s handling of its tailings. The Company submitted its environmental risk studies to the Mexican authorities, which included technical updates and modifications to its dry stack tailings from the mine operations. Starcore will continue to comply with the DGIRA requirements including mitigation, prevention and compensation as detailed in the Environmental Impact Assessment, The Company will also continue to comply with the implementation of any corrective measures ordered by the Mexican authorities.
- Our nursery specializes in cultivating plants essential for reforestation efforts, contributing to the restoration of ecosystems by reproducing an estimated 10,000 plants per year.
- Our reforestation plan provides for an estimated 7,500 plants to be planted every year from May to July.
- Our greenhouse and vegetable gardens provide a steady supply of fresh vegetables. We also buy from local suppliers when necessary.
- Our dry stack tailings process means we recycle more of our process solutions within the plant. This is a much more expensive practice to implement but shows our commitment to reclamation and the environment. This effectively reduces our water consumption and eliminates the risk of discharging harmful solutions into the environment. The tailing dams require strict environmental and operational control due to the proximity of the San Martín community. The arid ecosystem provides for predominantly shrub vegetation cover which contributes to soil stability. A sign of the stability maintained in this environment is the abundance of cacti species.
